HOW did it all begin? Discover the story behind the residence.
WHY are we doing this? Our mission statement:

To provide lodging for young people who wish to experience community living and social action in a Christian and peace church context.

WHAT is this all about? Read on...

Isolation is a major problem in Montreal, as it is in many urban centers. Those living at the residence will form a close community, whose activities at the MA will allow them to reach out to create ties of friendship with the larger community around them. Nine women and men live together, sharing meals, chores, play and worship.

In Matthew 25:35-36 Jesus tells his followers:

I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.

Montreal is a city of both vibrant life, and dehumanizing poverty. Volunteering while living at Maison de l'amitié allows residents to witness to their faith in both words and actions, and gives residents an opportunity to engage in Quebec culture and local issues. Each resident will have the option of working on a project for a local agency for two to four hours a week (flexible during exam periods!) to learn more about broader issues of poverty and inequality, and to gain practical work experience.

Much of the conflict in our daily lives and in the wider world is caused by poor communication and resultant misunderstandings. As such, it has always been important to the Maison de l’amitié to promote a multi-lingual environment. In keeping with this tradition, the Residence Program is open to both French and English speaking students. The MA also offers French and English second-language classes available on-site.

In keeping with Maison de l'amitié's goal to be a witness for peace and reconciliation in our neighbourhood, we encourage open communication and positive conflict resolution skills between residents.  To help students to develop this, we offer seminars on non-violent communication and conflict resolution.  Which residents are expected to attend.
